The Proof of the Pudding is in the Eating – Summer 2024 (english below)
Op maandag 15 juli vond de derde editie van The Proof of the Pudding is in the Eating plaats. De Perifeer was host van deze editie, die plaatsvond in Kunstenlab. Samen met geluidskunstenaar Luca Favaro creëerde ik een unieke dinerervaring waarin eten, geluid en lichamelijke aanwezigheid volledig met elkaar verweven raakten.

Het diner was zowel confronterend als meditatief. Gasten kregen vooraf de opdracht om hun eigen kussen en bord mee te nemen, waardoor de avond direct afstand nam van de conventies van een traditioneel diner. Na het wassen van hun handen konden bezoekers voedsel verzamelen van een centrale tafel waar het eten naadloos samenging met de organische en lichamelijke vormen uit mijn werk. Tijdens dit verzamelen klonk een compositie van Luca Favaro, opgebouwd uit versterkte en bewerkte eetgeluiden. Hierdoor werd de verbinding tussen het verzamelen van voedsel en het daadwerkelijke consumeren ervan versterkt.

Nadat iedereen zijn maaltijd had verzameld, namen de gasten plaats in de ruimte en deden zij de door de organisatie verstrekte oordopjes in. Gedurende twintig minuten aten de bezoekers het verzamelde voedsel volledig met hun handen en zonder geluid van buitenaf. Wat overbleef was enkel het intieme geluid van kauwen, slikken en ademhalen. Voor sommigen was het bijna ondraaglijk om zo direct naar hun eigen eetgeluiden te luisteren, terwijl het voor anderen juist een bewuste kennismaking werd met de fysieke ervaring van eten.
De samenwerking tussen Luca en mij ontstond vanuit gesprekken, gedeelde interesses en de sfeer van de locatie zelf. Geluid werd tijdens deze avond niet enkel gebruikt als ondersteuning van het diner, maar functioneerde als een architectonisch onderdeel van de ervaring. Luca’s praktijk onderzoekt geluid via installaties, improvisatie, veldopnames en compositie, terwijl mijn eigen werk draait om het creëren van zachte, kleurrijke werelden opgebouwd uit organische vormen, natuur en herinneringen aan speelgoed uit mijn jeugd. Door deze twee praktijken samen te brengen ontstond een avond waarin voedsel, geluid, lichaam en ruimte niet meer los van elkaar bestonden.
The Proof of the Pudding is in the Eating is een samenwerkingsproject van Artist Residencies Enschede, Drawing Centre Diepenheim en De Perifeer binnen het platform Beeldende Kunst Overijssel. Binnen dit project wordt een kunstenaar uit Overijssel gekoppeld aan een internationale artist-in-residence om gezamenlijk een dinerervaring te ontwikkelen waarin de uitkomsten van hun samenwerking met publiek worden gedeeld.
The Proof of the Pudding is in the Eating – 2024
On Monday, July 15th, the third edition of The Proof of the Pudding is in the Eating took place. De Perifeer hosted this edition at Kunstenlab, where visual artist Guusje Slagter and sound artist Luca Favaro created a unique dining experience together.
The dinner was both confrontational and meditative. Guests were asked to bring their own cushion and plate, immediately shifting the evening away from the conventions of a traditional dinner setting. After washing their hands, visitors could gather food from a central table where the dishes blended seamlessly with the organic and bodily forms present in my work. During this process, a composition by Luca Favaro — made from amplified and manipulated eating sounds — filled the space, strengthening the connection between collecting food and the act of consuming it.
Once everyone had collected their meal, the guests took their places throughout the room and inserted earplugs provided by the organization. For twenty minutes, participants ate the gathered food entirely with their hands, isolated from outside sound. What remained was only the intimate soundscape of chewing, swallowing, and breathing. For some, listening so closely to their own eating sounds became almost unbearable, while for others it became a heightened and conscious experience of consuming food.
The collaboration between Luca and myself emerged through conversations, shared interests, and the atmosphere of the location itself. Sound became more than an accompaniment to the dinner; it functioned as an architectural element within the experience. Luca’s practice explores sound through installation, improvisation, field recordings, and composition, while my own work focuses on creating soft, colorful worlds built from organic forms and references to childhood toys and nature. Bringing these two practices together resulted in an evening where food, sound, the body, and space became inseparable from one another.
The Proof of the Pudding is in the Eating is a collaborative project initiated by Artist Residencies Enschede, Drawing Centre Diepenheim, and De Perifeer as part of the Beeldende Kunst Overijssel platform. Within the project, an artist from Overijssel is paired with an international artist-in-residence to develop a collaborative dinner experience in which the outcomes of their exchange are shared with the public.
